Kobi
Kobi, the 8 months old flat coated Retriever cross was
diagnosed with severe Bilateral Hip Dysplasia, we were
told by the vet that he would need an operation at the
age of one, to replace at least one of his hips if not both.
After getting advice from a specialist they suggested
hydrotherapy as a way to build him up and provide low
weight-bearing exercise.
After being a bit unsure on the first session he now waits
by the door of the treadmill to be let in and paws at the
tread to get it going.
With the first 5 sessions it was clear that he was enjoying
the experience and was also getting much stronger and
putting on muscle mass, by session ten he had put two
extra inches of muscle on his back legs and was walking
and sitting much straighter.
After his 15th hydro treatment Kobi reached one year
of age. We took him back to the vet for a check-up and
review on the operaton. The vet was so pleased with
his progress and how well he is doing that he is off his
medication and there are no plans to even consider
him for an operation.
I would recommend anyone giving hydrotherapy a go
as we now have a very happy puppy again who loves
playing and being the centre of attention, all thanks to
Peninnah at Aquapaws and her supply of sausages!
We are so impressed that we are now taking our 7 year
old Collie cross along just for fun.

Kobi in the treadmill at Aquapaws...
Lucy
Well, what can I say about Aquapaws – it’s been so good,
I don’t know where to start...
Lucy, a Golden Retriever of over 8½ years, had a cruciate
ligament repair in May 2010 and, although successful,
the vet referred her to Aquapaws for hydrotherapy to help
build the muscles and strengthen the leg.
Not having a clue what to expect, we decided to give it
a go – we were given a warm welcome by Peninnah, but
Lucy was having none of it! She is quite verbal anyway
but it was awful – she didn’t stop barking from beginning
to end and refused to go anywhere near the treadmill
or up the ramp into the pool.
She was eventually coaxed and lifted into the pool. She
continued to look worried and we were stressed! After
that came the shower then the drying cabinet, she hated
it all! We nearly didn’t take her back but after lots of
reassurance from Peninnah we persevered.
After 2 more sessions Lucy was a changed dog. She
now barks to get into the treadmill and runs up the ramp.
She still barks, but I am sure it is for pleasure and not
dread. After 12 sessions her leg is looking good and is
much stronger. We look forward to going now. There are
always plenty of treats for the dogs and tea and coffee
for us.
